While Mortals Sleep

While I've mostly used this spot
to tell you about some great books on women's history, today I
want to tell you about a wonderful historical novel. I hope you
enjoy the review and I encourage you to buy the book!
While Mortals Sleep By Jack Cavanaugh
While Mortals Sleep is an historical novel by veteran author Jack
Cavanaugh, the first in his new series, Songs of the Night. It's
about Reverend Josef Schumacher, pastor of a small church on the
outskirts of Berlin. The minister had seen his father dragged
away by the Nazi's, and begins to rebel against the Nazi government
by training his own small youth corps to follow God rather than
Hitler. While Josef's wife, Mady, is against his work at first.
Her father is the former minister of the church her husband is
pastoring and she is torn between loyalty to her husband and devotion
to her father. She at last comes on board at great risk to herself.
Together they work to rescue the spiritual lives of Germany's
youth. Jack Cavanaugh has so skillfully interwoven his characters
and plot that the reader cannot possibly anticipate what will
happen when he turns the next page. One will experience joy, sorrow,
rage and fear. You will be carried from tension to relief to surprise
to shock.
