Jesus
Freaks
By dc Talk & The Voice of the Martyrs

This book was AMAZING. Bethany House sent me Jesus Freak 2, hoping I'd
review it, and I really didn't want to. The name Jesus Freaks kind of
turned me off. I guess I am not a "hip" parent and dc Talk doesn't
sing my kind of music. I really didn't know what the book would be about.
I asked my sister if she wanted to look it over and review it for me.
She said no. I asked my twenty-six year old niece to look at it. She said
no. I asked my teenage niece to read it - and SHE said no! Geesh. Well,
I brought the book back home and decided to look it over. Boy, am I glad
I did! I liked it so much that I asked Bethany House to send me the first
volume, which I will review here.
The book is quite large - almost 400 pages - and it has kind of an "antique"
look to it, so it looks kind of old. It is a book about people
who stood for Jesus with unwavering faith. Jesus Freaks is written in
a format that can be read in short chunks. You can pick it up if you have
a few minutes and read a quick story about any number of amazing, faithful
brothers and sisters in Christ.
The people profiled in this book are from all time periods; from the beginnings
of the Church until present day. Each story includes a Bible verse and
a page about why and how the person was persecuted for their faith and
how they stood for Christ. The stories were inspiring. I highly recommend
this book for parents to read and then share with their teens. Below is
a synopsis of the book from Bethany House's website.

Jesus Freaks
Stories of those Who Stood for Jesus
This
Gold Medallion-nominated book opens the eyes of a new generation to the
persecution of Christians around the world. Offering stories of martyrs
past and present, it's a wake-up call to prayer and to lives of unashamed
faith.
Definition
of martyr: (from the Greek word for "witness")
* One
who chooses to suffer death rather than to deny Jesus Christ or His work.
* One
who bears testimony to the truth of what he has seen or heard or knows,
as in a witness in court of justice.
* One
who sacrifices something very important to further the kingdom of God.
* One
who endures servere or constant suffering for their Christian witness.
* A Jesus
Freak.
There
are more Christian martyrs today than there were in 100 AD-in the days
of the Roman Empire. According to a study done at Regent University, there
were close to 164,000 Christians martyred around the world in 1999. Their
stories must be told.
